The persistently higher cost of gasoline in Canada has likely affected the development and travel patterns found in its cities. Motorists can compensate for short-term rises in gas prices by curtailing discretionary driving or purchasing vehicles with higher fuel efficiency. Sustained higher prices, however, lead to more fundamental shifts in location choices and travel behavior; people tend to move closer to workplaces to reduce the length of their commute and switch to alternative modes of travel such as biking, walking, and public transit.31 All these patterns are evident in Canada.
